We use mostly physics principles: general relativity to describe the orbit of the satellites, fluid mechanics to understand marine currents, optics and atmospheric science to predict how the light emitted by the Sun will travel to the surface of the Earth, and back through atmosphere to space where the satellites detect it… All of the above science principles are described by mathematical equations. We also use statistics to compare direct measurements with our satellite data and figure out how good they are.
